Gunman Kills 11 School Kids In Rio

In News • 8 April 2011 15:23

A gunman in Rio de Janeiro shot 11 students at a local school and injured a further 12 students before killing himself. The 24 year old gunman is thought to have been an ex student of the public school, with no criminal record, but reports say that he was mentally ill.
The assailant, Wellington de Oliveira, who was carrying two guns and a suicide note, allegedly told school officials he was there to make a speech before opening fire on students, according to media reports. The incident apparently was unrelated to the city's gang violence.
"The man responsible for the shooting was 24 years old and walked into the school well-dressed saying he was a guest speaker," said Rio de Janeiro's deputy Mayor, Edimar Teixeira.
The attack by 24-year-old Wellington de Oliveira is Brazil's first serial shooting at a school in Brazil, Sergeant Alves shot Oliveira on both legs before the gunman killed himself.
The governor said Oliveira had another fully loaded gun and was heading to the school's third floor when he was shot. Police found that Oliveira’s suicide note said that quote: “stand in front of my tomb and ask God to forgive me for what I did”
Dozens of families gathered outside a Rio de Janeiro hospital on
Thursday, waiting to hear about victims of a school shooting that left 11
children dead. At least 13 children aged between 12 and 14 years old

were also wounded in the attack, with four of them still hospitalized with serious conditions.
